Energising. Satiating. Nourishing. Alkalizing. Detoxifying. And delicious! There is so much goodness packed into this smoothie, and it's not even green! It is, in fact, the most ferocious fuschia smoothie ever.
Betalain, which gives beets their redness, is rich in antioxidants that protect cells against free radicals which play a role in heart disease, cancer and aging. Beets are packed with folic acid, vitamins A, B-1, B-2 and C, and essential minerals including iron, calcium and potassium. Combined with carrots and ginger, this smoothie helps to cleanse and detoxify the kidneys and gall bladder.
The taste is sweet spicy citrus bliss, but the texture could take some getting used to, particularly if you don't have a powerful blender. You could put everything through a juicer and make a killer juice but the benefits you get from all that vegetable fibre are a big bonus! Fibre is heaven to our digestive system and the arch enemy of toxins. It sweeps the junk out of the body and helps get things moving if you know what I mean!
If you can't do the texture and you don't have a juicer, pass your smoothie through a fine mesh strainer or muslin and be left with an amazingly sweet, citrusy juice.
Either way, this not so green smoothie is amazing and you will feel incredible for hours afterwards!:
1 large beetroot, peeled and chopped
2 oranges, peeled
1 inch chunk of fresh ginger, peeled
Squeeze of lemon juice
1-2 cups filtered water - your preference
Place all ingredients into your blender and whizz it up! Makes 2 big serves.
